Research Highlights

Time Magazine Examines Resiliency

Resilience was the focus of the January 17, issue of Time magazine.  The article, The Importance of Resilience: Why do some children bounce back from adversity better than others – and can that quality be taught? by Christine Gorman, summarized findings from resiliency specialists.  Not surprisingly, the parental bond established during the first three years of life was a key factor. In addition, children with intelligence or easy temperaments have an advantage.  Gorman also named several childhood behaviors that help foster resiliency including honing a talent, finding a champion, looking for things within one’s own control, learning to recruit help, and helping others.

Resolving Conflicting Accounts of Marriage Trends

The author of the article, Parental Divorce and Offspring Marriage: Early or late?, from the September 2003 issue of Social Forces, sought to resolve seemingly conflicting reports on whether Adult Children of Divorce (ACODs) tend to marry earlier or later than their peers from intact homes.  The article’s author, Nicholas H Wolfinger, identified results indicating that up until age 20, ACODs are relatively likely to marry young, but beyond that age, they tend to postpone marriage more than peers from intact homes, partially through a preference for cohabitation.  Variations in previous research regarding the marrying age of ACODs could also be accounted for in historic terms.  Although early studies showed higher marriage rates for ACODs, by 1994 the tide turned and those from divorced homes were slightly less likely than those from intact homes to marry.
